The Flyers Are Atop The A-10 Standings at 6-0

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women’s basketball team returns home to host George Washington Sunday, Jan. 21 at 12 p.m. ET at UD Arena. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers are atop the Atlantic 10 standings with an unbeaten 6-0 mark in conference play and have a 13-4 record overall. Dayton is 7-1 at home this season and currently riding a seven game winning streak.
Head coach Shauna Green is in her second season at the helm of the Flyers after going 22-10 in her first campaign last year. The WBCA National Rookie Coach of the Year returns an experienced squad with three seniors, six juniors, and three starters.
As a team, Dayton is averaging 75.8 points per game and giving up just 61.2, good enough for a +14.5 margin. The Flyers shoot 42.4 percent overall, 37.5 percent from three-point range, and 72.2 percent from the free throw line. They also benefit from a +6.9 rebounding and +0.9 turnover margin.
The Flyers are led by reigning A-10 Co-Player of the Week Jenna Burdette, who is averaging 14.4 points and 3.8 assists per game. Sophomore Jayla Scaife is contributing 14.9 points and 5.2 rebounds each contest while senior JaVonna Layfield averages a double-double with 12.2 points and 12.6 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
George Washington comes into the game with an 8-9 record on the season and a 3-2 A-10 mark. The Colonials are 4-4 away from home and in game two of their road trip. Head coach Jennifer Rizzotti is in her second season at GW.
The Colonials score just 60.5 points per game, but are only allowing 60.1 to opposing teams. GW shoots 38.0 percent from the field, 32.1 percent from behind the arc, and 75.5 percent from the charity stripe.
Leading the way is Brianna Cummings, who averages 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Kelli Prange is adding 11.1 points while Mei-Lyn Bautista runs the point with 4.0 assists and 2.4 steals per game.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton battled back and picked up a hard-fought 63-62 win at Fordham Wednesday. The Flyers held on late with a defensive stand and were led by Layfield’s career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds.
George Washington pulled out a 53-48 win at Davidson on Wednesday, despite holding the Wildcats scoreless in the first quarter. The Colonials shot 31 percent from the floor and were led by Brianna Cummings’ 20 points and eight boards.
The Flyers and Colonials have met 40 times previously with George Washington having the most success with 31 victories. GW won last year’s meeting in Washington, D.C., 52-39, ending Dayton’s 11-game winning streak.
The Flyers head back out on the road to Richmond Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. against the Spiders.
